Philippines Pesos

        - United States Administration -

The silver pesos of the Philippines stuck under United States administration, possibly along with the other circulating coins of the Philippines under  U.S. administration are the most under-rated series in the "Red Book".

A "salvage peso" is a "MUST HAVE" - a "common" coin with an UNCOMMON history.

Struck at the Philadelphia & San Francisco mints with "
United States of America"  in the legend, these are "American" coins. The design of the peso and the other circulating coins of the period is credited to Filipino sculptor Melecio Figueroa,(1842-1903) who lived just long enough to see his coins enter circulation.

All dates are relatively affordable, though the 1906-S will be pricey in low grade - and AUTHENTICATION IS A MUST!!! - these are a prime target for counterf
eiters.
The proof only issues are also somewhat pricey, but still within an average collector's means.

It  is still possible to find nice uncirculated type coins for far less than other
       far more common  U.S. coins.

    Imporant "12" marker

Numerals 12 heavily stamped into a worn 1910 Philippine Peso.

Although unclear from the photo - the area of the coin at the base of the stamp  has been protected from the wear that afflicts the rest of the coin, demonstrating significant circulation  after the mark was placed. I conclude that this piece was used as a token or counter for years after it was stamped.

The Philippine "host" may be unrelated to the coin's eventual use.
The "12" suggests a
British associated currency.

If you have any information on this piece, please c0ntact me:
