This collection consists of 6 pieces
considered to have be struck in 1853, representing the
$1.00, $.50. and $.25 in round and octagonal shapes. The
1853 federal dollar, while not fitting
in the series, seemed an appropriate "space filler" until (and if) I
can find and afford a round
California dollar.
The 5 California pieces gold pieces are part of a
very scarce series, "Period I, Fractional Gold".
This series, "Period One" as opposed to"Period Two" and "Period Three"was issued from 1852 to 1856
and actually circulated in the gold rush era.
Of approximately 15,000 existing pieces of all three periods, a small minority are Period One.
