As of this writing, E.C. Beardsley's identity remains a mystery. Perhaps, with the increasing access to old business directories, we may learn who this prolific counterstamper was. Brunk listed the 1879 Morgan Dollar in the 1986 edition of his Merchant & Privately Countermarked Coins along with several seated quarters and half dollars. Because the mark would have been more likely to decrease the value of those coins when Brunk first identified them, it is safe to assume that this is a genuine contemporary mark of the late 19th century. Reported examples: Seated quarters: 1876, 1877 Seated halves: 1847, 1864, 1876(3), 1877 Prussia Vereinsthaler 1865-A, Y-170a Seated Dollars 1871 ?
